Thorvaldsdalur Terrain Run - The oldest terrain run in Iceland, only about 25 km from Akureyri.
Thorvaldsdalur Valley Terrain Run is the oldest terrain run in Iceland. It took place for the first time in 1994 and every year since. The run is held early July (first Saturday of July) each year in the Þorvaldsdalur Valley in northern Iceland (about 20 km north of Akureyri town). In 2019 it will be held on July 6th.
The Þorvaldsdalur Valley is peculiar in the sense that it opens in both directions, in the south to Hörgárdalur Valley and to the north to Árskógsströnd on the west coast of Eyjafjördur fjord. The run starts at the farm Fornhagi in Hörgárdalur Valley at 90 m above sea level. The finish line is at Árskógsskóli school at about 60 m above sea level. The total distance is ca. 25 km.
The run begins at 12:00 pm from the Fornhagi farm in Hörgárdalur Valley but you can leave your vehicle by the finish line on Árskógsströnd at 11:15 am where a bus will take the runners to the start.
Time registration stops at 4:00 pm.
Registration fee is ISK 10000, online registration ends on Friday July 5th at 20:00. Registration is at hlaup.is. Those who register before 20:00 on Sunday June 30th. will receive a dry fit shirt with a logo of the run from 66°N. It is also possible to register on the morning of the run although no shirt will then be included.
Included in the registration fee:
- medal and prize for three first runners in each gender
- shirt from 66°N (if registered before 20:00 on Sunday 30th of June)
- bus from finish to start
- four drinking stations
- soup and bread at the finish line
- security during the run and transport to finish in case of exhaustion
