Old Toys on Display in Friðbjarnarhús
Friðbjarnarhús is believed to have been built in 1856. The house is named after Friðbjörn Steinsson, bookbinder, bookseller and member of the Municipal Council for a great many years. The Independent Order of Good Templars in Iceland was established at Friðbjörn´s home and in 1961 the I.O.G.T. bought the house for the purpose of establishing a memorial museum.

The Gil Society
In 1991 the foundation meeting of the Gil Society was held, marking the real beginning of the construction of an Art Centre in Grófargil which is now the focal point of culture in Akureyri. This is where we find the Akureyri Art Museum, the Akureyri School of Art, new exhibition halls of varying dimensions, for example in the Ketilhúsið (the Boiler House) which can also be used for conferences.
