The National Day of Iceland which is on the 17th of June is very important celebration for the people of Akureyri as it is to all the people of Iceland, as this is the day the Republic of Iceland was formed. The town is decorated with flags and a full celebratory program starts at 12.45 in and runs until midnight, suitable for all ages.
The main festivities start at 13.00 in the botanical gardens. From there a parade makes it way downtown launching the start of this family based festival. Later in the evening there will be music and entertainment in the town square. The program ends with a march by the 2016 graduates from the Akureyri Junior College through the town square, around midnight.

13:00 to 13:45 Main Celebrations in the Botanical gardens
The national day celebrated with speeches, poetry reading and music from The Church Choir of Glerárkirkja Church, Boys Choir Appleton from Wisconsin and more. Music played by the marching band before the parade.
13:45 Parade from the Botanical gardens to Ráðhústorg (downtown - main square)
The Scout group Klakkur and the marching band will will lead the parade.
14: 00-17: 00 Scout Tivoli for children downtown
17:00 Sailing with the oak boat Húni II. All guests and visitors are welcome, departure from downtown harbor, lasting 45 min.
11:00 and 17:00 Theatre play „Gosi/Pinocchio“ by Lotta theater company in the Botanical gardens. For the whole family - only in Icelandic. Tickets: 2,300 Isk. No reservation or pre-sale. Remember to dress according to the weather.
14:00 to 16:00 Family celebrations at Ráðhústorg main stage (downtown).
Lotta theater company will present the festival schedule. Speech by "Lady of the Mountain" and the 2016 Junior College Graduates. Shows by Steps Dance Center and music by local artists.

Evening songs with the Scouts in Skátagilið, events & music on the main stage by local artists.
23:30 Traditional gathering of the Junior College Graduates at Ráðhústorg (main square).
