The Anniversary of Akureyri Municipality is celebrated annually on the weekend closest to the day of establishment which is the 29th of August. In 2019 it will be held on the 30th-31st of August. It´s a celebration including cultural events like exhibitions, visual art, music, science and so on. LÍF, photography exhibition of ÁLFkonur will be located in the BOTANICAL GARDEN the entire weekend.
10:00 AM - ART STREET - Kaupvangsstrćti
The chairman of Akureyrarstofa, Hilda Jana Gísladóttir and children from the Lundarsel and Pálmholt preschools will take down the Arts Summer Festival flag and hoist the flag of Akureyrarvaka while singing happy birthday to Akureyri.
6:00 PM - Hof Cultural Center
The Cultural Society of Akureyri will offer a guided tour of the exhibition “Stórval í 110 ár” in the Hof Cultural House. Tinna Stefánsdóttir, the great granddaughter of the artist will tell stories and discuss each painting in Icelandic.
Opening of Kaktus
Kaktus will open their new facility at Strandgata 11b on Friday 24th of August from 7 PM to 10 PM. Vibrant workshops and exhibitions. Additionally, Kaktus will be open on Saturday 25th of August 4 PM to 8 PM. Sponsored by Akureyrarstofa.
8:00 PM – 9:30 PM - CALM OF DUSK IN THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
Akureyrarvaka will be formally begin in the Botanical Garden. Kristján Edelstein will greet guests with gentile playing of the guitar and the chairman of Akureyrarstofa, Hilda Jana Gísladóttir will commence the festival formally. The festivals program will be briefly listed just before the garden will filled with art. Performing will be Sóknarskáld, The mens choir of Akureyri – Geysir, Guđrún Harpa Örvars and Kristján Edelstein, dancers from STEPS dancecenter, Birkir Blćr and the electronic musician Stefán Elí, examples from the first album of Kjass will be played and finally the photographic and tool exhibition “Einu Sinni Var” will be opened in the Botanical Garden. It will be located in the shed below the Icelandic flowerbeds. The exhibition will be open 8 AM to 4 PM until the 30th of September 2018.

The visual and audio piece Coco Vin will be projected on the building while it is dark outside. The video was made by Katrín Björg Gunnarsdóttir and Anne Balanant. The audio was composed by Áki Sebastian Frostason.

Jazz concert with the band Tusk at Hof Cultural Center. Band members are pianist Kjartan Valdemarsson, drummer Birgir Baldursson, guitarist Eđvarđ Lárusson and bass player Pálmi Gunnarsson. 1862 Nordic Bistro and the Cultural Society of Akureyri welcomes everyone to the concert.

Temporary road closures 24th – 26th of August.
From 6 PM Friday to midnight on the 24th of August the Arts Alley will be closed due to the installation of the stage that will be located at the bottom the Arts Alley. Parallel to this installation the pedestrian street in Hafnarstrćti will close to traffic. The stage will be removed after midnight on Saturday and will these streets open again to traffic on 10 am Sunday morning.
From 8 AM Friday to midnight on the 24th of August Hafnarstrćti will be closed from Austurbrú to Suđurbrú due to the Ghost House in the old theatre. Routs from Ráđhústorg (main square) til be closed from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday 25th of August, parts of Skipagata, parts of Strandgata and lastly parts of Túngata.
