Midsummer Night is celebrated in 2019 on the 22nd to the 23rd of June. In Iceland this day is called Jónsmessa named after John the Baptist.  According Icelandic folklore many strange things happens during Midsummer Night e.g. the cows gain the power to speech and seals can become human.

In Akureyri this day is celebrated with various events, some relating to old traditions and folklore.

 

Below is the program of the festival 2018 which gives an idea of its content. New program for the year 2019 will be added as soon as it is known or minimum 2 weeks prior  to the festival.

Opening Ceremony of Akureyri Art Summer 2018

Hof Cultural Center

Alexander Kristjánsson Edelstein plays the grand piano.

Hilda Jana the chairman of the board of Akureyrastofa gives the opening speech.

Urđur Shar and Katrín Birna showcase a part of the dance „Ekki hreyfa ţig.“

A brief introduction to the events of the Akureyri Art Summer.

Opening of the exhibition „Stórval í 110 ár“ with a short introduction and a music performance.

Light refreshments, and everyone is welcome.
