Akureyri is a town with many green areas, playgrounds, football fields, biking and walking paths ect. The Akureyri Swimming pool with water slides, children’;s pool and hot pots is a must. The duck-pond below the pool and the botanical garden with its small ponds, bridges, pathways and open areas are popular places to visit.
The Kjarnaskógur Woods is the main recreational area of the locals. The area has many paths, two playgrounds, Volleyball field, nice pick nick areas as well as barbeque facilities.
With the boats Haffari and Húni II trips are offered on sea where one can enjoy tours either for sightseeing or sea-angling.

During summer Holliday (beginning of June until end of August) many courses are offered for children e.g. by the scouts, the sport clubs, the riding club, the golf club and the boat club. The courses are open for all children 6 years of age and older. Depending upon type of course children can participate for everything between a half a day up to two weeks. The library, the Akureyri Museum and the Nonni house are among museums in Akureyri that children enjoy visiting. Additionally activities are go bowling or go for a movie at the cinemas (films are normally not dubbed but with Icelandic text).

During winter Akureyri offers a lot of winter activities e.g. skiing, cross-country, ski school, skating or sledding.
