Ůar me var d÷nskum kaupm÷nnum, sem ■ß voru allsrßandi Ý Akureyrarverslun, sagt strÝ ß hendur. GrßnufÚlagi hafi ekkert me alla eyrina a gera og hˇf ■vÝ snemma a selja einstaklingum skika og ˙thluta lˇum.

GrßnufÚlagi - Fight against Monopoly

There was little incentive to build on Oddeyri - no work and far from the centre of Akureyri. No roads were built until around 1892, so communications were difficult in inclement weather. However, in 1869, the coming of the Icelandic commercial enterprise, GrßnufÚlag, saw Oddeyriĺs inclusion into Akureyri township. The companyĺs boat, Grßna, transported goods to and from Iceland. Two years later the company set up a store in the building Lundur, sparking fierce competition with Danish tradesmen who had held a monopoly over Akureyriĺs commercial business. But GrßnufÚlag did not require all their land and sold off small pieces to the townspeople. Some for pasture, others for house building. By the shore were landing places for shark fishers, and later herring boats. Piers sprang up, and on higher ground, vessels were built. From the early 20th century and up to WWII refuse was disposed of below and to the north of GrßnufÚlagĺs premises. Ash and other waste was thrown into a very large tidal pool, long gone to make way for streets and houses.

Big picture:
Oddeyri Point and the Estuary 1931. In autumn 1929 Shell obtained permission to build oil tanks on the Point. Herring boats onshore await the next season. Around the Estuary are plots for the open air washing and drying of salted fish. GrßnufÚlag buildings far right are the only houses remaining from this period.

Oddeyrartangi around1930. Shark liver oil was processed, ships builtáá in the open air, and on the pier women salted herring.
Strandgata around 1920. Piers were erected in spring and removed in autumn. GrßnufÚlag in the foreground.
Life on Strandgata around 1905. Farmers exchanged their produce for goods.
GrßnufÚlag's premises around 1890; in reality three attached houses. The building farthest left was transported from Vestdalseyri, Seyisfj÷rur in 1873, the one farthest right from SkjaldarvÝk in 1876, and the centre house was built in 1878.
