Laxdalsh˙s

١tt h˙si vŠri fyrst og fremst nota sem Ýb˙arh˙s gerist ■a 1827 a nřstofna Amtsbˇkasafn hˇf bˇka˙tlßn Ý Laxdalsh˙si.

Laxdalsh˙sUpphaf h˙ssins er ■a a ßri 1792 fÚkk Jˇhann P. Hemmert ˙tmŠlda byggingarlˇ ß Akureyri ■ar sem hannáreisti Laxdalsh˙s 1795.

┴ri 1943 keypti AkureyrarbŠr Laxdalsh˙s gagngert til a koma ■ar fyrir h˙svilltum bŠjarb˙um. A vÝsu er vandsÚ a kaupin hafi leyst mikinn vanda ■vÝ a ■ß ■egar bjuggu ■ar 22 Ýb˙ar og varla plßss fyrir fleiri.á

═ j˙nÝ 1984 var ■a opna a nřju og hefur sÝan hřst margskonar starfsemi.

Akureyri's oldest house

Laxdalsh˙sThis is where the merchants wanted to settle down, where the seabed slopes down sharply from the shore, enabling ships to anchor within easy conversation distance from dry land. Piers did not exist in those times and all commodities had to be ferried ashore in small rafts or boats. Here, you are standing where the shoreline lay during most of the 19th century. The house with the tree in front of you is Laxdalsh˙s, the oldest house in Akureyri, built in 1795 by Johan P. Hemmert, manager of Kyhns-verslun, one of the largest Danish stores in town. The house is, however, named after Eggert Laxdal who, in 1874, became managing director of the Danish company which at that time owned the house.

Although primarily used as residential and commercial premises, the house also became, in Laxdalsh˙s1827, the first headquarters of the newly established district archives and town library. Here books could be borrowed free of charge and the librarian ľ a Danish merchant ľ received no salary. In 1943 Akureyri municipality purchased the house for the express purpose of housing homeless people. This purchase, however, apparently achieved little as the house already accommodated 22 individuals.

Laxdalsh˙s became a protected building in 1978 and was reopened after extensive renovation in June 1984. Since then, various activities have been conducted under its roof.á
