Norurgata

Eldsvoar hafa sett svip ß Oddeyri. Fyrsti bruninn var vori 1906. Ůß brann Strandgata 23 og um hausti brunnu meal annars tv÷ glŠsilegustu h˙s kaupstaarins ofarlega ß eyrinni.

Til a verjast eldinum voru h˙s klŠdd utan me steinskÝfum og bßrujßrni. Ůegar fyrsta aalskipulag bŠjarins var sam■ykkt 1927 lÚk ekki lengur vafi ß a steinsteypa vŠri hi eina rÚtta byggingarefni.

Norurgata - the Coming of Concrete

Fire has made its mark on Oddeyri. The first fire was in spring 1906 at Strandgata 23 then that same autumn two of the most imposing houses in the upper part of town were destroyed. To prevent fire the houses were clad with slate and corrugated iron, but when general planning was agreed in 1927 concrete became the building material of choice. Timber was too inflammable, which means that the low timber houses so prominent in the side streets were constructed before 1927, after which concrete took over.áá

This is clearly seen at the corner of Strandgata and Norurgata. Houses nearest Strandgata are usually one storey timber dwellings with a dormer loft, built before the concrete age. Further away, north of Strandgata, concrete buildings take over. Norurgata is the oldest side street out of Strandgata and at its northernmost end is Norurgata 31, the first house built there in 1858. 152, ENS 150

Big photo:ááNorurgata around 1915. Strandgata 29, the large house furthest away, was built by Snorri Jˇnsson, carpenter and merchant in 1897; it was demolished in 1987. In the forefront is Norurgata 2. Both houses are clad with slate.ááThe car is a Ford owned SoffonÝas Baldvinsson, the first driving licence holder in town.

Small photos:
* The large stone building, Norurgata 17, is actually two houses built in 1882 and 1884, preserved and protected. The lower house contained a printworks. It is constructed of basalt using mortar, with cement as grouting. áNo other building in Akureyri is built this way.á
* People at F˙lilŠkur, Oddeyri in 1882. Gamli-Lundur is furthest to the left. In the distance is goldsmith Jˇsep GrÝmssonĺs house. The light coloured two storied house, Norurgata 11, still stands, as does the large stone house, Norurgata 17.
*1968, a car crash at the corner of GrßnufÚlagsgata and Norurgata. To the right is the little turret shop built in 1933. This was a small corner shop, known as ôThe Turretö and later ôEsjaö. GrßnufÚlagsgata was long Oddeyriĺs main street.
