Drive a little further into Víðinesdal along the recently carable trails and from there walk along shepherd's trails up to Almenningsháls. From there you walk out to Elliða (894 m) and down to the exit gate where the car has been left. Lots of views compared to the height, maybe not for the very adventurous but you can walk to the west of the mountain where it is narrowest. The ascent is gradual, nowhere very steep where you walk.
