Steinunn Jóhannesdóttir Hayes (b. 1870) was an Icelandic woman who moved to the West at a young age. She broke into education and became the first Icelandic woman to complete a medical degree in 1901 from the University of Southern California. She spent her working life in China, as a missionary doctor for 40 years, during a time of great revolution and conflict, and was for a time a prisoner of the Japanese army in China.

Little has been discussed about the Stone in Iceland, but Þorgerður Anna Björnsdóttir, who studies the history of relations between Iceland and China, has mapped the history of this remarkable woman.

The lecture is part of the Akureyri Academy's series of events this year for residents of the nursing homes and other residents of the town. Norðurorka hf. sponsors the event.
