How to Get There: Domestic

Several options are available for transportation between Reykjavík and Akureyri, as well as other destinations within North Iceland and Akureyri. One can select from flying, taking a public bus along the ordinary road system, a tour-bus over the highland-route Kjölur (summer only) or drive/fly privately or rent a car or a bus. For traveling within the north of Iceland, ferries can be added to the choices when traveling to the island Grímsey and Hrísey.

Flight:
Flights from Reykjavík domestic airport to/from Akureyri
Air Iceland Connect offers scheduled flight between Reykjavík and Akureyri (and vice versa) several times daily, all year. The flight takes about 40 minutes. For information and bookings visit www.airicelandconnect.is
It is also possible to arrange flights privately e.g. with Circle Air, Norlandair or Mýflug.

Bus:
a) Schedule (Strætó) - Public
Between Reykjavík and Akureyri along main road nr 1 & between Akureyri and surrounding towns in the north and east of Iceland
Winter: 9th of September 2019 - 15th of May 2020
Summer: 26th of May - 8th of September 2019 (to give an idea - new schedule comes in May 2020)

Strætó offers scheduled bus tours - route57 -  between Akureyri and Reykavik (and vice versa).   
Departures are from Reykjavík at the bus terminal at Mjódd in Reykjavík (and also from Ártún and Háholt in Mosfellsbær)
Departure from Akureyri are outside the Cultural house Hof by Strandgata 12 (the bus stop is marked).
The route takes about 6 hrs. Time schedule can be found on the companies webpage www.straeto.is or by phone (+354) 540 2700.
Tickets for all schedules with Strætó can be bought on board the bus, at the tourist info center in Hof and Olís gas stations in Glerárgata.
Normally buses depart according to these times:
From Akureyri to Reykjavík: 10.15 (arriving 16.44) and at 16.20 (arriving 22.49)
From Reykjavík to Akureyri: 9.00 (arriving 15.29) and at 17.30 (arriving 23.59) 

Scheduled routs are also offered to the following towns in the North and North East Iceland. Buses depart from Akureyri to Siglufjörður through Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður, to Húsavík and Egilsstaðir passing through Laugar and Mývatnssveit. For further information, check www.straeto.is 

b) Bus Schedule (SBA Norðurleið)
Between Reykjavík and Akureyri over the highland Road Kjölur
During summer months scheduled bus tours are offered over the mountain track Kjölur between Akureyri and Reykjavik (and vice versa). Departure is from the bus terminal in Reykjavík and the bus terminal in Akureyri. The route takes about 5.40 hrs. Timetable can be found on the companies webpage www.sba.is
