The Anniversary of Akureyri Municipality is celebrated annually on the weekend closest to its establishment date, August 29th. This vibrant celebration, known as Akureyrarvaka, features a rich program of cultural events, including exhibitions, visual arts, music, science, and more.
In 2026, the festivities will take place on August 28th–29th. The festival brings together locals and visitors alike to enjoy a diverse range of events and experiences that capture the spirit and creativity of Akureyri.
Applications have now opened for grants related to events at the festival. Grants range from 50,000 to 300,000 ISK. The application deadline is June 16th. Applications are submitted through the service portal of Akureyri Municipality.
