Bræðrafell - Askja.  

Departure at 08.00 in private cars (four-wheel drive necessary).

Day 1: We drive from Akureyri to Herðubreiðarlindir oasis. After lunch we walk to Bræðrafell hut, across lava fields north of Herðubreið mountain but our cars will be brought to Dreki hut by the hut wardens.
Walking distance: 17 km
Day 2: We climb the lava shield Kollóttadyngja and observe the huge crater in this old volcano. Then we walk to the Bræðrafell mountain and observe many interesting geological features there, after which we return to the hut.
Day 3: We walk from Bræðrafell hut south to Dreki hut by Drekagil gorge and stay overnight in Dreki hut. Walking distance: 19 km.
Day 4: We walk from the Dreki hut west across the Dyngjufjöll massif into the Askja caldera. The group will be collected from the car park at Öskjuop and brought back to Dreki where our cars await us. We return home that evening.
