Birtíngur, a young, innocent soul, is exiled from his childhood home due to his love for the enchanting Kúnígúnd. He wanders the world, facing earthquakes, wars, tortures, slavery, and the dreadful misfortune of accidentally stabbing people. Despite all this, he tries to live by the life philosophy of his teacher, Altúnga: “…those who say everything is fine are half-wits; one should say everything is in absolutely the best possible order.” Birtíngur never gives up on his quest for love, hoping to reunite with the fair Kúnígúnd.

Birtíngur, by Voltaire, is one of the most famous satirical critiques in history, tackling war, violence, inequality, and injustice. It also explores beauty, superstition, abuse of power, and tyranny with sharp, dark humor—all leading to the simple conclusion that one must cultivate their own garden.

This production brings together Bergur Þór Ingólfsson (director of major productions such as Mary Poppins, Billy Elliot, and The Blue Planet) and Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson (composer known for works including Ávaxtakörfan, Benedikt búálfur, Gosa, and the band Todmobile), along with a talented ensemble from Leikfélag Akureyrar.

Expect a lively, heartfelt, and thrilling performance exploring harrowing adventures with humor and poignancy.
