A four-day walking tour in the Ódáðahraun lava wilderness, following the Askja-trail which the FFA established some years ago. A deposit of ISK 10,000 is required when booking the tour. Overnight accommodation is in huts owned by the FFA. Food will be transported by bus between the huts.
Day 1: We drive from Akureyri to Dreki hut and look around the Herðubreiðarlindir oasis on the way.
Day 2: We walk from Dreki hut across the eastern part of Dyngjufjöll massiv into the Askja caldera. We look at the crater Víti and perhaps go for a swim in the crater. A bus picks us up at the car park in Öskjuop pass, bringing us back to Dreki hut. Walking distance: 11 km.
Day 3: We drive up to Öskjuop pass and walk from there northwest across the Dyngjufjöll massiv through the Jónsskarð pass to Dyngjufjalladalur valley where we stay overnight in the Dyngjufell hut. Walking distance: 14 km.
Day 4: We walk north towards Suðurárbotnar oasis and spend the night in the Botni hut. Walking distance: 20-22 km.
Day 5: We follow a jeep track through the Suðurárbotnar oasis to the Svartárkot farm in Bárðardalur valley where the bus picks us up. Walking distance: 15-16 km.
