A Warm and Sunny July
July 2026 was unusually warm in Akureyri, with an average temperature of 13.3°C. This was 2.1°C above the 1991–2020 average and 1.5°C above the average of the past ten years.
It was the fourth-warmest July on record in Akureyri since measurements began. Only July 2021 and July 2025 were warmer, while July 1933 had a similar average temperature.
Despite the warmth, the month was exceptionally dry. Only 8.1 mm of precipitation was recorded in Akureyri throughout July, just 25% of the average July rainfall for the period 1991–2020. Only once before has less rainfall been recorded in July in Akureyri — in 1929.
There was also plenty of sunshine. Akureyri recorded 200.1 hours of sunshine during the month, which is 47.6 hours above average.
July was therefore characterized by warm temperatures, very little rainfall and plenty of sunshine in Akureyri. The weather varied considerably across Iceland, however. While the north and east experienced warm and dry conditions, the southwest and west were cooler and considerably wetter.
Looking at the first seven months of the year, the average temperature in Akureyri was 4.3°C, which is 0.2°C above the 1991–2020 average. Total precipitation from January through July was 249.0 mm, or around 95% of the average for the same period.
Akureyri truly enjoyed great July — warm, sunny and exceptionally dry.
