Akureyri Recognized as a Regional City
A major step for balanced regional development in Iceland was taken this week when Parliament approved a new Urban Policy for 2025–2040. With this policy, Akureyri is officially recognized as a regional city, acknowledging its important role in the country’s regional growth.
The new policy aims to strengthen Iceland’s two main urban areas — Reykjavík and Akureyri — enhancing the nation’s competitiveness by promoting diverse living opportunities and the targeted development of infrastructure, education, services, and employment.
For Akureyri, this marks an exciting opportunity to continue growing as a vibrant regional hub — offering quality of life, innovation, and a variety of experiences for residents and visitors alike.
