Ash Wednesday in Akureyri – a beloved Icelandic tradition! 🍬
This week has been full of festivities – from Bun Day (Bolludagur) on Monday to meat soup on Thursday, and today we celebrate Ash Wednesday, the main carnival day for Icelandic children.

In Akureyri, children dress up in creative costumes, visit local shops and businesses, and sing songs in exchange for candy – a fun twist on Halloween, where the kids’ performances really count! Many put a lot of effort into their outfits, choreography, and even creating their own lyrics.

Ash Wednesday has a long tradition here in Akureyri. Schools close for the day so children can fully enjoy the celebrations from the early hours, keeping the carnival spirit alive.
