A total of 389 children were born at Akureyri Hospital last year, including two sets of twins. Of those newborns, 169 were girls and 220 were boys — a noticeably higher number of boys than girls.
The total number of births is slightly below the five-year average of around 404 births per year, according to the hospital’s maternity ward.
✨ A special milestone:
The first child born in North Iceland this year arrived at 07:09 on New Year’s morning. She is a healthy baby girl weighing 4 kg, and she comes from Grímsey Island, near the Arctic Circle — a small community with only about 60 residents.
