Caught mid-fluff on Grímsey Island this summer, this Red-necked Phalarope chick is now a seasoned traveler, heading toward the tropics.
Not bad for someone who just learned to walk a few months ago!

These tiny shorebirds make one of the most incredible migrations in the bird world — from the northern shores of Iceland all the way to the tropical Pacific, off the coasts of Ecuador and Peru.
There, they spend the winter entirely at sea, feeding on plankton in the open ocean — a truly oceanic lifestyle.

Grímsey, part of the Akureyri municipality, sits right on the Arctic Circle and is a unique birdwatching destination in North Iceland — especially during the summer nesting season.
