Mountain roads gradually opening for summer travel

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) is now gradually opening Iceland’s mountain roads and F-roads as snow conditions improve and road inspections are completed.
The opening process takes place over several weeks each summer, depending on weather, snow melt, river conditions, and road safety assessments. Some routes may open early, while others remain closed well into the summer season.

Travellers heading into the Highlands are encouraged to:
Check the latest road conditions before departure.
Respect all road closures and warning signs.
Use a suitable 4x4 vehicle on F-roads.
Be prepared for rapidly changing weather and river crossings.

The map shows the current status of mountain roads across Iceland, including which routes are open, partially open, or still closed. For the most up-to-date information, visit the official road information service here.
