Súlur – the town mountain of Akureyri

Looking for a challenging yet rewarding hike with unforgettable views? Just 10 km from downtown Akureyri, Súlur awaits! The hike takes you up two rhyolite peaks – Ytri-Súla (closer to town) and the higher Syðri-Súla (1,213 m). From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramas of Eyjafjörður and Akureyri when the skies are clear.

Start: Parking lot at the end of Súlurvegur

Distance: ~5 km one way (5.7 km to the southern peak)

Elevation gain: ~900 m

Time: 4.5–7 hours

The trail is marked but can be steep, muddy, and slippery – sturdy hiking boots and poles highly recommended.
