The First Day of Summer in Iceland is a national holiday celebrated on the first Thursday after April 18th—this year, it falls on April 24th. While it may seem early for summer by most standards (Iceland can still be cold!), this day marks an important seasonal shift in the traditional Old Norse calendar, which divided the year into only two seasons: winter and summer.
Historically, Icelanders followed this two-season system, and April signified the end of the long, dark winter and the beginning of lighter days, increased daylight, and hope for warmer weather ahead.
A common tradition is to give children a summer gift on this day —in older times, these were practical items, but nowadays they’re often fun outdoor toys.
