A! Performance Art Festival takes place in Akureyri, October 8–10, 2026.
A! is an international performance art festival and collaborative project held annually, now for the twelfth time. The festival is a collaborative effort between Akureyri Art Museum, Akureyri Theatre Company, Hof Cultural and Conference Centre, Gilfélagið, the Visual Arts Programme at VMA, and the Akureyri Art Association. Events take place in various cultural venues throughout the town.
A! is one of very few festivals in Iceland dedicated exclusively to performance art, and for many years it was the only one of its kind. Performance art is an extremely diverse art form and can be said to be gaining increasing recognition, having moved from the margins towards the centre of contemporary art.
The programme features a wide variety of performances and theatre-related works of all kinds. Participants include young and emerging artists alongside experienced and well-known performance artists, as well as dance and theatre practitioners, from both Iceland and abroad. Every year, the festival transforms Akureyri into a vibrant hub of exciting performance art.
Admission to all events is free.
