Skólavarða

The walk to the Skólavarða "School-cairns" (piles of rocks), is a popular hike among locals in the Vaðlaheiði mountain range, on the eastern side of the fjord, opposite Akureyri.

The starting point is here, indicated with a sign "Skólavarða", where one also finds free parking. From there one needs a couple of hours to go up and come back, on a fairly straight but a steep path to the top, where you will find the the cairns "Skólavarða". A "varða" is a pile of stones that indicates a geographical point. From up there you can see Akureyri, the fjord, and even Fnjóskadalur valley if you walk further to the east up-on the mountain.
