The New Year in Akureyri is celebrated in the traditional Icelandic way.
New Year's Eve offers a bonfire by the golfcourse Jaðar, a fireworks show, ball and entertainment, and the townspeople participate in the festivities with great flair by setting off fireworks at midnight.
On the attached aerial photo you can see where the bonfire will take place, which this time is in a new location from previous years, south-west of the golf course at Jaðar. In the picture you can also see the area where cars can be parked and walking paths to where the bonfire will be lit at 20.30 on New Year's Eve.
Although the bonfire had to be moved, the annual fireworks show on New Year's Eve will be held in its place not far from energycompany Norðurorka's headquarters, and it will start around 21.00, hosted by the local search and rescue organisation Súlur.
Concerts and dances are held in the town way into the early hours of the morning and leading up to the midnight hour thousands of fireworks will light up the sky above Akureyri, creating a unique atmosphere, welcoming in a New Year.
Hliðafjall the ski centre of Akureyri is open during New Year and for those wanting to participate in organized tours there are several tour operators that offer tours like: jeep tours, gourmet tours, hiking, horse riding, snow scooter tours, northern light tours etc.
