Body Weather workshop - From touch to dance

Develop deeper more sensitive awareness of the body and its creative possibility

Body Weather Workshop Akureyri Iceland 4-7 June 2026
with Frank van de Ven (BW Amsterdam/Melbourne)

From Touch to Dance
Body Weather is a multi-faceted training and performance practice that examines the shifting relationships between body, environment, and perception.
Originating in the early 1980s with Japanese dancer Min Tanaka and further developed by Body Weather Laboratories worldwide, it approaches the body not as a fixed unit, but as a dynamic field of influences - physical, emotional, social, and
environmental. Like the weather, the body is understood as constantly changing, porous, and responsive to what surrounds and moves through it.
After a morning session devoted to moving, stretching, grounding, breath, alignment, and partner work, we focus on how developing multiple qualities of touch and being touched can expand one’s movement skills and vocabulary. Touch makes us aware of the world inside and outside of us. To touch is to be touched.
After a clear set-up we will expand what we find into Improvisation.

Frank van de Ven was a member of Min Tanaka’s Maijuku Performance Company in Japan (1983-1991), and since then he has become one of the central figures in the international Body Weather network. He co-directs Body Weather Amsterdam, a
platform dedicated to training, artistic research, and interdisciplinary creation. Frank has led Body/Landscape projects across the world and, since 1995, the annual Bohemiae Rosa Project with Milos Sejn (Academy of Art and Design, Prague),
connecting movement, ecology, geology, and embodied perception

The workshop encourages curiosity, humour and attentive presence. It is suitable for dancers, performers, visual artists, theatre practitioners, somatic researchers, and anyone interested in developing a deeper, more sensitive awareness of the
body and its creative potential.
