Is having children becoming a privilege for some?

Open meeting organized by Zontakl. Þórunn hyrna. Lecture by Sunna Símonardóttir.

Lecture by Sunna Símonardóttir, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Akureyri. Open meeting organized by the Zonta Club of Þórunn Hörna in Akureyri.
Over the past decade, the birth rate in Iceland has been in free fall. It is generally assumed that each woman needs to have 2.1 children in her lifetime to maintain the population, but by 2024 the birth rate had fallen to 1.56 children. What is primarily driving this trend is the delay in parenthood, i.e. people are waiting longer to have their first child, and research also indicates that childlessness has increased. This talk will present the results of an extensive research project that aims to examine and analyze this trend using a variety of methods.
Sunna Símonardóttir completed her PhD in sociology from the University of Iceland in 2017. She has specialized in research on parenthood, gender composition, and fertility. She currently leads, together with others, the research project The Impact of Policy and Parental Culture on Childbirth in Iceland (https://fibi.hi.is/).
