The Cod Wars in a New Light by Dr. Guðni Th. Jóhannesson
NB in icelandic
“Early in the morning of May 14, 1973, the British patrol vessel Othello docked at the pier in Akureyri. The previous summer, Iceland had extended its fishing limits to 50 nautical miles, but the British refused to recognize the new boundary, leading to confrontations at sea. Tensions were high among Icelanders, something that became clear that day in the capital of North Iceland.
In this lecture, the sequence of events will be traced, touching on many locations — not only down at the harbour, but also at the Ice Cream Shop, the Meat Processing Plant, the police station, and last but not least, the hall of the Akureyri Junior College. Finally, the lecture will discuss what lessons can be learned from the ‘Othello clash’ and other episodes in the history of Iceland’s Cod Wars.”
This is the opening lecture in the lecture series The Past in a New Light. The lectures are held at the Akureyri Museum, in collaboration with Akureyri Academy and the Icelandic Historical Association.
