Presentation in icelandic.
Iceland took on a new character with the occupation. The calm and quiet that had characterized everyday life gave way to a constant stream of dramatic events. Marching soldiers, fast-moving vehicles, fleets of ships, roaring aircraft, wailing sirens, explosions and the crack of gunfire all became part of daily life — mixed with brass bands, soft drinks and the cheerful atmosphere among soldiers off duty.
Society changed dramatically within just a few years, and this was perhaps most evident among young people. A new youth culture began to take root, and the era of the “stælgæi” (the stylish young man) and the “skvísa” (the fashionable young woman) had arrived.
Historian Leifur Reynisson weaves this story together with colourful accounts in his book Hernámsæskan (The Occupation Youth).
