Káinn, Fjaran and Vesturheimferðir
Lecture by Jón Hjaltason, historian, about Káinn.
Káinn (was baptized Kristján Níels Júlíus Jónsson but was called K.N. or Káinn) was born in 1859, grew up in Akureyri and in Eyjafjörður but moved to Vesturheim at the age of 19, where he lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba and later in North Dakota. Káinn was a popular gardener and known for his witty and funny quips.
A few years ago, Jón published a book about Káinn called: Fæddur til fækka tárum: Káinn: ævi og ljóð.
In the lecture, Jón will talk about who Káinn was, the struggle for life in Fjörður in Akureyri and the reasons why he moved west across the ocean.
The lecture is part of the Akureyri Academy's series of events this year for residents of the nursing homes and other residents of the town.
Norðurorka sponsors the event.
All welcome!
