Saturday Guided Tour

Creation of Childhood 2026. In icelandic

Creation of Childhood 2026

On Saturday, March 21 at 15:00 (3 PM), a guided tour of the exhibition Creation of Childhood 2026 will be offered. Admission to the tour is included in the regular entrance fee to the Art Museum.

An exhibition titled Creation of Childhood has been held annually at the Art Museum in Akureyri since 2015. The aim of the exhibition is to strengthen museum education and to highlight and encourage the creative work of children aged 5 to 16. Participants each year include schoolchildren, professional visual artists, and the Akureyri Museum / Toy Museum.

This year, visual artist Sunna Svavarsdóttir was invited to take part in the project. In her work, Sunna opens a dialogue about how we find our way through the world using our senses. She often works with materials and situations that encourage sensitivity toward small and subtle details. In the artworks, perception, memories, and space intertwine, inviting the viewer to pause, actively engage, and become part of the work.

The participating schools this year are the Tröllaborgir preschool and the primary schools Brekkuskóli, Glerárskóli, Naustaskóli, and Oddeyrarskóli. During the winter, the students visited the Art Museum and created their works for the exhibition under the guidance of the artist. The focus was on exploring different senses and forms of artistic creation that are not necessarily limited to the visual. The children experimented with texture, materials, space, and scent based on their own experiences. This resulted in artworks built on the interaction of the senses, often with a playful undertone.
