Guided Tour at Akureyri Art Museum – Saturday, March 15 at 15:00
On Saturday, March 15 at 15:00, a guided tour will be offered for the exhibitions "The Creativity of Childhood 2025" and "The Homeland Painting: A Journey Through Northeast Iceland of the Past Century." Admission is included in the entrance fee to the Akureyri Art Museum.
This is the twelfth time that an exhibition under the name The Creativity of Childhood is being held at the museum. The aim of the exhibition is to enhance museum education, highlight, and encourage the creative work of children aged five to sixteen. Participants include schoolchildren, working artists, and the Akureyri Museum / Toy House. This year, sculptor Sólveig Baldursdóttir was invited to take part in the project. The participating schools are Hólmasól Preschool and the primary schools Giljaskóli, Hlíðarskóli, Lundarskóli, Oddeyrarskóli, and Síðuskóli. Throughout the winter, schoolchildren, along with their teachers, visited the museum and created their works for the exhibition under the guidance of the artist. They had the opportunity to meet Sólveig and use her sculptures as inspiration for their own creations.
The exhibition The Homeland Painting takes us on a journey through Northeast Iceland, spanning more than a century of history. These are paintings created with love and warmth, filled with an emotional connection to local landscapes and memories of the past. On this journey, we are remarkably lucky with the weather! Both trained artists and self-taught enthusiasts have taken up the brush, creating works in a personal dialogue with places and memories. The driving force behind these paintings is a sincere desire to depict and share, deepen connections, remember, and preserve—rather than engaging with artistic movements or trends. The works preserve the histories of various individuals, and the exhibition features paintings by around thirty artists from across Northeast Iceland. At the same time, they tell the story of a homogeneous community sharing similar destinies during times of social change.
This exhibition is a collaboration with the Reykjavik Art Museum.
