The works of Óli G. Jóhannsson (1945–2011) reflect a deep connection to nature and the diversity of life. He is known for his distinct abstract expressionist style, where the forces of nature – the sun, the wind, and the sea – flow through the paintings.
Óli’s path to art took an unexpected turn when he survived a serious maritime accident as a fisherman in the mid-1990s. This unforeseen event became a turning point, leading him to dedicate his life fully to painting.
Influenced by the COBRA movement, Óli’s works transform fleeting moments and memories into lasting forms that reveal both their beauty and depth. His paintings served as a kind of receiver for the most significant impressions of his days – nature, emotions, and scattered moments – while at the same time inviting reflection on life itself.
In Óli G.’s 80th anniversary year, we honour his memory and his gift for capturing the raw beauty and complexity of life. His works live on as a valuable legacy, connecting viewers to nature and to the human experience.
