The route follows the southern foothills of Hlíðarfjall, with the option of a detour up the mountain.

Drive to the parking area at Leirhnjúkur, north of the Krafla Power Station. The hike begins with a walk to Leirhnjúkur, followed by a marked trail to Reykjahlíð, largely following the lava field from 1727 known as Eldá. The route runs along the southern foothills of Hlíðarfjall, with the option to make a side trip up the mountain.
Distance: 15 km
Elevation gain: No elevation gain on the main route; an optional 300 m ascent if hiking Hlíðarfjall.
Cars will need to be self-shuttled between Reykjahlíð and Leirhnjúkur.
