What happens when chance, chaos, movement and sound meet on stage?
Abolishing Chance is a new interdisciplinary project by Puruñeka Duo, bringing together six new works for percussion duo, composed by artists who all studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
The project draws inspiration from Stéphane Mallarmé’s groundbreaking poem Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard (A Throw of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance) and explores a world where nothing is ever completely fixed: rhythms collide, sounds transform, and movement becomes part of the music.
Mallarmé’s poem breaks with traditional form and embraces abstract ideas and multiple interpretations. We took this freedom as the starting point for a creative collaboration between six composers, two choreographers, dancers and musicians.
Through unconventional instruments, extended playing techniques, new sonic landscapes and the interplay of music and movement, each composer creates their own musical world. Yet all the works are connected by a shared fascination with chance and unpredictability.
Abolishing Chance goes beyond the traditional percussion duo. It is a fusion of music, movement and sound, where each performance can take an unexpected direction.
