The Symphony Orchestra of Norðurland Honors Jón Nordal
In March 2026, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of composer Jón Nordal, born on March 6, 1926. To mark this occasion, the Symphony Orchestra of Norðurland will perform two of Jón’s masterpieces: Óttusöngvar að vori for two soloists, choir, and orchestra, and the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. In addition, a new work by Daníel Þorsteinsson, Akureyri’s Town Artist 2000, will have its premiere.
Jón Nordal is one of Iceland’s most significant and remarkable composers, gaining attention even at a young age. At just 19, his violin piece Systurnar í Garðshorni was performed at the Artists’ Assembly in 1945.
