Línumál – Vikar Mar 2025
Art Exhibition Opening at Hof, Saturday, June 7 at 14:00 – All are welcome!

Vikar Mar (b. 1999) is a visual artist based in Hjalteyri, Eyjafjörður. His work primarily focuses on painting, exploring themes such as materiality, repetition, and symbolism as the core of his visual inquiry. He mainly uses acrylic on canvas but also creates works on found surfaces and materials sourced from his surroundings.

He has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group shows across Iceland. His studio in Hjalteyri is regularly open to the public, serving as a living space for works in progress and dialogue with visitors.

In his exhibition Línumál at the Cultural House Hof in Akureyri, Vikar Mar continues his investigation into painting as a medium of meaning, perception, and material. The exhibition presents a visual language based on repeated linear formations. Here, the line acts as both structure and symbol, motion and trace—pushing beyond conventional boundaries of interpretation.

The works draw inspiration from the idea of undecipherable scripts and how visual presentation can evoke meaning without clarity. Instead of using symbolic or narrative methods, Vikar develops abstract works that function as open systematic expressions—forming a kind of visual grammar in which the viewer faces forms that appear systematic yet resist concrete interpretation.

Repetition plays a key role in the composition. Lines and strokes are arranged into patterns reminiscent of written language—yet without obeying its semantic rules. This method places the works in a conceptual space between visual perception and reading, where uncertainty becomes part of the experience.

The surfaces of the paintings carry a material-based thought process—the paint, the layering, and the strokes form a narrative of their own, independent of external reference. The visual field becomes not a place of representation, but a space for thought, matter, and time.

Línumál does not offer clear answers but instead invites viewers to engage in an open-ended reading process where meaning flows and emerges only through presence, contemplation, and perception.
