Malinche is the embodiment of the multivoiced, where cultural worlds meet and fuse understanding, knowledge, connections, and power into a magnificent blend. “Neither sun nor snow, neither here nor there — only threads of a new vision, woven into the roots of the self.” This is an interdisciplinary contemporary dance work combining Icelandic wool, a fragmented light installation, a mysterious soundscape, and three dancers.
Malinche is a contemporary dance piece by dancer and choreographer Yuliönu Palacios. Performed by three dancers, the work places Icelandic wool at the forefront, creating a parallel world from it. Through animal-like movements and an immersive sound environment, Malinche evokes a chaotic and dreamlike reality where different creatures meet. The work aims to emphasize humanity’s uncontrollable need to belong to a group, herd, team, or other collective, which we constantly strive to define.
In this way, Malinche belongs to no one — the piece becomes foreign in the fullest sense of the word. Malinche is a true utopia, woven from wool, where everyone is welcome regardless of origin, background, or ethnicity. Previous social divisions are overturned. The work is designed to foster empathy among humans, a vision especially relevant in light of today’s shifting world perspectives and widespread conflicts.
The event is supported by the VERÐANDI Art Fund.
