May the Circle Be Unbroken - Art Exhibition of Gillian Alise Pokalo

Exhibition of new paintings inspired by Icelandic landscapes and northern lights

The title of this exhibition comes from a Quaker hymn of the same name, which is about the cycle of life.
The artworks in this exhibition began in November 2025 in response to the death of Gillian’s dear friend
and mentor, with whom they first saw the Northern Lights together. These paintings are in memory of
Frumi Cohen: playwright, musician, artist, teacher and friend. The works are woven together with memories
they shared in the Icelandic landscape.
Gillian’s work has been inspired by the Icelandic landscape and evocative sky ever since her first visit
in 2014. What happened then was a development towards the life she now lives here in Akureyri, as both an
art teacher and a visual artist. Her first visit led to a number of other travels, artist residencies,
courses, murals, and finally to making her home in Akureyri with her husband and sons.
Before moving to Iceland, Gillian had an active artistic career in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA,
where her work was regularly exhibited in galleries. She was a member of many art organizations and today
she is a member of the Professional Artist Network for Speedball Incorporated, a manufacturer of silkscreen
printing products in the USA. Since graduating from Moore College of Art Design in 2005, her work has been
in many public and private collections both in the USA and in Iceland, including 20th Century Fox,
Duus Museum in Keflavík, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and others.
