The Creation of Childhood 2026

The exhibition titled The Creation of Childhood has been held annually at the Akureyri Art Museum since 2015.

The exhibition titled The Creation of Childhood has been held annually at the Akureyri Art Museum since 2015. Its goal is to strengthen museum education and showcase, as well as stimulate, the creative work of children aged five to sixteen. Each year, participants include schoolchildren and professional artists, in collaboration with the Akureyri Museum / Toy Museum.

This year, visual artist Sunna Svavarsdóttir was invited to participate in the project. In her works, Sunna opens a conversation about how we navigate the world through our senses. She often works with materials and situations that call attention to sensitivity toward small details. Her pieces intertwine perception, memory, and space, encouraging the viewer to pause, engage actively, and become part of the artwork.

Participating schools this year are Tröllaborgir Preschool and the primary schools Brekkuskóli, Glerárskóli, Naustaskóli, and Oddeyrarskóli. Over the winter, the students visited the Art Museum and created their works for the exhibition under the guidance of the artist. Emphasis was placed on multiple sensory experiences and creative processes not necessarily tied to the visual. The children experimented with texture, materials, space, and smell based on their own experiences. The resulting works are rooted in the interplay of senses, often with a playful undertone.

Admission to the museum – free for ages 18 and under.

The exhibition opened on February 28 and runs until April 26, 2026.
