Harp concert with new works by composers from akureyri

The musician,  visual artist and harpist Mahaut Ingiríður Matharel, Summer Artist of Akureyri 2026, will hold a harp concert on August 22nd featuring original works by Akureyri composers. She has composed three pieces for the concert herself and received pieces from other Akureyri composers, Þorvaldur Örn Davíðsson, Jóhann Valur Björnsson, Guðjón Elí Ingvarsson, Michael Jon Clarke and Ísólfur Raymond Matharel.

The process began in the spring when Mahaut began composing and requesting pieces, after which she gave presentations to the composers explaining how it would be good to compose music for the harp. Some pieces are solo pieces while others are chamber, and the chamber group consists of young, aspiring musicians.

"The goal of this concert is to allow composers to compose for rarely heard instruments, especially here in North Iceland. Since the harp is mainly used in orchestras and is a very unique instrument, composers often do not know how to write for it or are shy about it, and for this purpose, the presentations were held, which covered both technical aspects, fun effects that can be used, and what to watch out for when writing for the harp. This is also intended to help musicians get their voices heard outside the walls of music schools in an independent project.

The concert will be held in Akureyri Church on August 22 at 6:00 PM.
