For many years now it has been a tradition for ÁLFkonur to set up a new photography
exhibition at the Akureyri Botanic Garden at the beginning of each summer. For each exhibition we decide on a theme to work with. This summer we decided to dedicate the exhibition to the 100th year anniversary of the Icelandic Professional Photographers Association. The founding meeting was held 1926 and was attended by 18 photographers, most of whom worked in Reykjavík. It's interesting to note that 3 of the members were women.
We came up with the idea to work with photographs from Akureyri taken 100 years ago, preserved at The Akureyri Museum (Minjasafnið). The group worked separately and tried to find the exact location of the photographers who took the original pictures. When we thought we were standing at the right spot, we pressed the shutter.
The town has changed a lot in 100 years and it often made it difficult to get good photos as buildings or trees obscured the entire view. It was a pleasant surprise to see that although much has changed, some of the houses that can be seen in the old photos are still standing.
