National Day of Iceland (17th of June)

The National Day of Iceland which is on the 17th of June is very important celebration for the people of Akureyri as it is to all the people of Iceland, as this is the day the Republic of Iceland was formed. The town is decorated with flags and a full celebratory program starts at 13.00 in and runs until midnight, suitable for all ages.

June 17 - Akureyri. National Day comes to you! 

The flower car will be around the town from 13-15. It starts in the suburbs (Síðuhverfi) and ends in the old town. Fun for the whole family. 

 

Festivities and events in six venues in town (see photo):

 

1) Lögmannshlíð at 13.00

Mayor Ásthildur Sturludóttir speaks. Female Choir Kvennakór Akureyrar performs the national anthem, rev. Sindri Geir Óskarsson gives a blessing and Akureyri Brass Band performs. 

 

2) San Síró at 13.30
Theatre group Lotta for the kids by Lundaskóli school. Free admission. 

 

3) Hlíð at 14.30

Female choir Kvennakór Akureyrar, Akureyri Brass Band and speeches in Icelandic. 

 

4) Akureyri Museum / Minjasafnsflötin at 15.00-16.00

Scout Tivoli,  Theatre group Lotta performs for the kids and more fun for the family. Museums in the old town open and free admission to Akureyri Museum, Industry Museum, Toy Museum and Nonni's House.  

 

5) Í gegnum linsuna - Lífríki Norðurslóða 

Photography exhibition opening by Hof Cultural Center at 16.00.

 

6) Sailing with Húni II
Free sailing with Húni II at 16, 17 & 18.
