Just south of Akureyri lies Kjarnaskógur, Iceland’s most visited forest and one of the area’s most popular outdoor recreation sites. Covering approximately 600 hectares, the forest is home to more than one million trees of various species planted over the past 50 years.
Kjarnaskógur offers something for everyone — whether you enjoy peaceful walks, outdoor sports, family activities, or birdwatching.
Activities & Facilities
* Hiking & Walking Trails: The area features a 7 km illuminated walking trail, along with an extensive network of scenic woodland and backcountry paths.
* Mountain Biking: A dedicated 10 km mountain bike trail winds through the forest and surrounding landscape.
* Family-Friendly Facilities: Visitors can enjoy e.g. three playgrounds, picnic areas, barbecue facilities, restrooms, volleyball courts and much more.
* Birdwatching: Kjarnaskógur has rich and varied birdlife. Bird lovers can visit the birdwatching shelter by the marsh Hundatjörn in Naustaborgir.
* Camping: The nearby Hamrar campsite offers easy access to the forest and surrounding recreational areas.
* Winter Activities: During winter, weather permitting, up to 10 km of the trail network is groomed for cross-country skiing.
How to Get There:
