Konudagurinn (Women’s Day) is a cherished annual tradition in Iceland dedicated to celebrating and honoring women. It took place yesterday (Sunday, February 22).
By the 19th century, the name Konudagur had become widely used. Traditionally, the woman of the household was given special recognition during the winter season. Konudagurinn developed as a counterpart to Bóndadagur (Husband’s Day), creating a balance in honoring both women and men in Icelandic tradition.
In the 20th century, the celebration became more modern, with merchants promoting special meals and flowers for women. Today, Konudagurinn is marked with thoughtful gestures such as flowers, small gifts, breakfast in bed, or a special meal prepared in honor of the women in one’s life. Bakeries often create festive cakes and treats for the occasion, adding a sweet touch to the celebration.
Konudagurinn celebrates all women — partners, mothers, daughters, friends, colleagues, and family members.
